How to brush your teeth correctly

Oral cavity hygiene for children

Teaching your child to maintain oral cavity hygiene is vital to keep their smile beautiful and shining for years to come.

The earlier you start teaching your child, the better. Start with your own finger, wrapped in warm wetted gauze. Massage and clean his gums with soft circling movements. Very soon you will be able to give your child a special brush, called teether, to help the baby get used to real toothbrush. If you keep your baby's mouth clean after each meal since the first days of his life, he will get used to this and later will naturally start brushing his teeth himself.

Parents should clean the child's teeth every morning and every evening for pretty long time (6-7 years). During the first years they should use baby brush with resin spikes that carefully cleans teeth and gums. Soon your child will say that he wants to do it on his own - don't stop him, it's already a breakthrough. When your child is more than one year old, you may gradually replace the brush by a new one with soft polyether stubbles, small head and a comfortable handle. Before the first use wash the brush with soap and warm water and do it every day.

At the age of 2 or 3 the child may start learning more details - how to brush, how to rinse his mouth correctly, without swallowing the water.

Show the child how to wash the brush with warm water and how to rinse his mouth. He should brush hiss teeth as if he swept them. Upper teeth are brushed top-down, to take food remains from under the gum, and lower teeth are brushed bottom-up. It is necessary to clean inside surface, although it is more difficult to clean than the external one. At the end the chewing surface should be cleaned with horizontal and circling movements. The child should try to do it himself, but after that you should finish what he couldn't do properly.

Take time to teach your child, and gradually he will learn to do it right.

Besides, it is necessary to floss side surfaces or clean them with special brushes. They are more difficult to use for a child, so he will need all the help he can get. In return, the child will develop one more useful habit: to take water in the mouth and guggle. Don't forget to clean the toothbrush - you should keep it as clean as your teeth.

The main point is - don't be lazy and clean your teeth twice a day. Until the child is 6 you should check that the he doesn't use too much of colorful and tasty toothpaste, to make sure the child doesn't eat it. You did care to buy special low-fluorine baby toothpaste with fruit taste, right? Your child will never refuse it! Also you need to buy a baby toothbrush with a beautiful thick handle that is perfect for a little hand. Don't forget to replace it every 1-3 months, as soon as the spikes are deformed.

When your child is about 6 you can trust him to apply toothpaste and brush his teeth on his own, but still keep an eye on him. As for electric toothbrushes, it's better to use them when milk teeth are replaced by permanent ones and enamel hardens.

We want to wish you patience and persistence for many years to come - teach your child to brush his teeth correctly, and you will always enjoy his happy smile.
